Being Safe In Your Community

Submitted by: Cori N. Baker

We should not only be wary about the security of our homes. We should also be watchful about what happens all over the community that we live in.

Here are the things that any responsible community member should do in order to improve the security and safety of the community:

Report. The community, its members, and its leaders will be able to take action on a certain problem if the information was able to get to them. Making simple reports such as making known about areas that lack proper lighting can help solve the problem. But, this might not just be your problem. You might not know it, but such setting has also been a problem by your neighbors, they just didn’t make an effort to tell the community leaders about it.

Also be quick to report about certain discrepancies, issues, accidents, and other situations wherein other members of the community can get involved in for a solution to be made available.

Be proactive. One situation where you can be proactive is when there are new development sites near or within your community. To ensure that all the plans that are being made there will not be in any way hazardous to people living in your community, you need to know what they are doing. Also, make sure that you do such an action in the early stages of their project.

Taking initiative may also be applied in starting fund raising, community development programs, or awareness campaigns for the betterment of everyone in your area.

Organize or join watch groups. Communities are mostly spearheaded by leaders and backed-up by a few members who are active residents of the community. In becoming the leader of the group, you get to call the shots on how things should be done in order to achieve certain goals that your community has set.

Likewise, becoming a leader also improves your role in the community. But more importantly, taking an active role to make sure that your community is safe is always advantageous. It also shows that you are unselfish and are concerned about other people, especially those in your area.

Plan for emergencies. Examples of emergencies that you should plan for include natural disasters. There should be designated evacuation areas or meeting places in case of different forms of disasters. The planning stage will be overseen by the community heads but with active participation from most if not all of the households in the community.

Ensure community safety. Safety is more than just protection from thieves at night. It will also involve safety in the homes by the use of cameras, safety fences, etc. The streets may also be safer when there are volunteer watch groups or there are better traffic regulations imposed.

Building designs should also be good and not pose any danger to the people in the community. Even playgrounds and other facilities for the youth should be safe.

Of course, all of the activities of the community groups and leaders should be in accordance with what most of the residents in the community want. Also, these should be in compliance with the laws of the state that you are in.
