Looted, possibly contaminated body parts transplanted into USA, Canadian patients

Fears of contaminated bone and skin grafts are being felt by unsuspecting patients following the revelation that funeral homes may have been looting corpses.

Janet Evans of Marion, Ohio was told by her surgeon, “The bone grafts you got might have been contaminated”. She reacted with shock, “I was flabbergasted because I didn’t even know what he was talking about. I didn’t know I got a bone graft until I got this call. I just thought they put in screws and rods.”

The body of Alistair Cooke, the former host of Masterpiece Theatre, was supposedly looted along with more than 1,000 others, according to two law enforcement officials close to the case. The tissue taken was typically skin, bone and tendon, which was then sold for use in procedures such as dental implants and hip replacements. According to authorities, millions of dollars were made by selling the body parts to companies for use in operations done at hospitals and clinics in the United States and Canada.

A New Jersey company, Biomedical Tissue Services, has reportedly been taking body parts from funeral homes across Brooklyn, New York. According to ABC News, they set up rooms like a “surgical suite.” After they took the bones, they replaced them with PVC pipe. This was purportedly done by stealth, without approval of the deceased person or the next of kin. 1,077 bodies were involved, say prosecutors.

Investagators say a former dentist, Michael Mastromarino, is behind the operation. Biomedical was considered one of the “hottest procurement companies in the country,” raking in close to $5 million. Eventually, people became worried: “Can the donors be trusted?” A tissue processing company called LifeCell answered no, and issued a recall on all their tissue.

Cooke’s daughter, Susan Cooke Kittredge, said, “To know his bones were sold was one thing, but to see him standing truncated before me is another entirely.” Now thousands of people around the country are receiving letters warning that they should be tested for infectious diseases like HIV or hepatitis. On February 23, the Brooklyn District Attorney indicted Mastromarino and three others. They are charged with 122 felony counts, including forgery and bodysnatching.

Botox is well known as a treatment for facial wrinkles. It’s a purified derivative of the toxin that causes botulism and acts as a paralytic to block nerves, which causes muscles to relax.

Botox is used for a variety of medical conditions, including hyperhidrosis, which is excessive sweating. The main use of Botox for this condition is axillary, or under the arms, although it’s also used in treating the face, palms of the hands and soles of the feet. There appears to be reduced effectiveness in these other areas, however. The formula works by blocking the nerves that activate the sweat glands, causing them to cease function.

Treatment should only be given by a trained physician. It involves a series of injections, each near a sweat gland in the underarm or other area. This may cause discomfort, although a local or topical anesthetic is often given. The procedure is done in a doctor’s office, and on the day of treatment patients should avoid heavy exercise or other activities that may cause excessive sweating.

Patients usually see initial results within 48 hours, with full results in about a week. Most experience a reduction in sweating of up to 50 percent or more, and the effects generally last up to six months or more. If some areas were missed with the initial procedure, the physician can “fill in” with additional injections to the affected site. Some patients experience relief for longer periods with continuing treatment.

As with any drug there can be side effects, and certain people should not receive Botox. It’s important for patients to discuss their full medical history with their physician prior to treatment. Those with certain nerve or muscle conditions should not use Botox. Pregnant or nursing women should also avoid use.

Some patients have had allergic reactions, such as shortness of breath, itchy rash and swelling. Seek medical attention immediately for an allergic reaction. Anyone with a previous allergic reaction to Botox should not receive this procedure.

Additional serious side effects include difficulty swallowing or speaking, vision problems, loss of strength or muscle weakness; particularly in the arms with underarm treatment, and neck pain.

China overtakes Germany as world’s biggest exporter

August 9th, 2022

Sunday, January 10, 2010

Chinese officials have said that their country’s exports surged last December to edge out Germany as the world’s biggest exporter.

The official Xinhua news agency reported today that figures from the General Administration for Customs showed that exports jumped 17.7% in December from a year earlier. Over the whole of 2009 total Chinese exports reached US$1.2 trillion, above Germany’s forecast $1.17 trillion.

Huang Guohua, a statistics official with the customs administration, said the December exports rebound was an important turning point for China’s export sector. He commented that the jump was an indication that exporters have emerged from their downslide.

“We can say that China’s export enterprises have completely emerged from their all-time low in exports,” he said.

However, although China overtook Germany in exports, China’s total foreign trade — both exports and imports — fell 13.9% last year.

Insurance And Tax Planning}

Insurance and Tax Planning

by

seoeasypolicy

People have been buying life insurance over the years not just for the insurance part of the equation it is the tax benefit as well as investment insurance that catches peoples imagination. Income tax is an expense that you would want to reduce. When you file income tax return, it would help to have options that work towards the tax saving potential of your investments. And life insurance becomes just the right set of tools to save tax.

Life insurance and tax benefit:

It is a known fact that many people take up life insurance to save tax. However, lets face it that is not the primary selling point of life insurance. In fact, life insurance should not even be considered primarily from the perspective of investment insurance, since the very purpose of life insurance is to insure against risks that might put your family and dependants in trouble. Life insurance provides financial security to people who look to secure the future of their family and loved ones.

The tax benefit as well as the investment potential associated with life insurance is essentially incidental. However, the tax benefit that comes with life insurance is significant enough to make material difference to your expenses associated with income tax return.

Tax saving in life insurance:

According to legislation under Section 80C, a sum of Rs. 100,000 is eligible to be exempt from taxable income when it is invested towards premiums in life insurance. And the Section provides for investment in other options as well, as in the case of employee provident fund, public provident fund, equity linked mutual funds, and in National Savings Certificates.

One of the key factors to keep in mind when buying life insurance is tax. Although insurance should not be bought to save tax, the tax savings provided under various Sections of the Indian Income Tax Act, make buying insurance cheaper as well as an efficient investment for long term savings.

With life insurance, any premium paid by the individual towards insurance policies taken in his or her own name, in the name of their spouses, or in the names of any of their children, would be tools for tax saving, as long as the premium paid towards insurance does not exceed 20% of the sum assured.

It may be noted that there are legislative changes that propose a decrease in the limit of exemption to save tax from insurance premium paid to 10% or less of the sum assured. In effect, this would allow for higher amounts of sum assured on premium paid, which should be beneficial to the investor. It would help to keep a tab on changes in legislation with regard to tax plan and its impact on tax saving.

Tax plan and maturity benefits / death claims:

It is not just the premiums towards life insurance that are exempted from income tax. Section 10(10D) of the Income Tax Act postulates that payments made to the insured by the insurer upon maturity of the insurance policy or in the form of payments on death claims would be exempted from income tax, thus proving the worth of insurance as instruments to save tax. However, single premium policies may not be eligible for exemption under the tax plan.

Danish PM pushes for new referendum on euro

August 6th, 2022

Friday, November 7, 2008

Anders Fogh Rasmussen, the Prime Minister of Denmark, said on Tuesday that he will seek broad parliamentary support for a national referendum on joining the euro, the common currency of the Eurozone.

“I’m convinced that we need broad support in parliament to hold a referendum, because it’s about the Danish currency and about stability and safety,” he said, speaking at his weekly press conference. “Recent events have shown the necessity to give the population the opportunity to vote on Denmark joining the euro.”

Berlingske Tidende is reporting that Rasmussen is meeting with political leaders to negotiate support for the referendum.

In 1992, Danish voters rejected the Maastrict Treaty in a referendum. It was only able to pass the following year after the Edinburgh Agreement granted Denmark an opt-out of the third stage of the Economic and Monetary Union of the European Union (EMU).

In 2000, Denmark again rejected the common currency in a euro referendum. The current currency of the Scandinavian country is the Danish krone. As part of stage two of the EMU, the exchange rate of the krone is allowed to fluctuate within a ±2.25% range to the euro.

In order to maintain this peg Danmarks Nationalbank, the central bank, adjusts interest rates and performs foreign exchange operations by buying and selling currency. To do this, Danmarks Nationalbank has had to raise rates twice, even as other central banks, including the European Central Bank (ECB), were lowering rates to deal with the current economic crisis.

As a result, interest rates in Denmark are now 175 basis points higher than the ECB’s rates. As recently as May, the difference was only 25 basis points.

Rasmussen heads the Venstre party which leads a minority coalition government. The main opposition party, the Social Democrats, also support adopting the euro as the nation’s currency.

While there has long been support among the politicians, the euro has failed when it has been put before the voters. However, recent opinion polls have shown a growing support for the euro among Danes. The most recent of these have seen those in favor just topping the 50% level needed to pass a referendum.

Rasmussen has said he wants a referendum put before voters before 2011. His government had originally planned to hold a referendum this past September to abolish the EMU opt-outs, but that was scrapped when Ireland voted down the Treaty of Lisbon.

On October 30, while in Stockholm, Sweden, Rasmussen said: “The euro ensures political and economical stability in Europe and the current financial turmoil makes it evident that Denmark has to join the Euro.”

Analysts consulted by Berlingske Tidende have said that an endorsement from the Socialist People’s Party (SF) could prove to be the tide-turner.

“If there was a vote, then I would vote Yes. But I am of the opinion that it is stupid to hold a vote unless we first have a real debate. We haven’t had a debate in eight years and all arguments need to be tested,” said Margrete Auken of SF.

Three babies dead within one week at Madrid Hospital

August 5th, 2022

Sunday, March 4, 2007

A Spanish hospital reported today that three premature babies have died within one week from the same infection. The babies, who were being cared for in the neonatal intensive care unit of Madrid‘s 12 de Octubre Hospital, all died after being infected with Klebsiella pneumoniae bacterium. Authorities also suspect that a fourth baby has become infected with the bacterium. The Spanish patients’ association ADEPA has asked the public prosecutor of the Madrid Region, Manuel Moix, to open an investigation into the matter.

This morning, hospital authorities stated that the first death occurred on 26 February. A baby born eight weeks prematurely and weighing just under one kilo died due to septic shock arising from the infection, which was unconnected with the symptoms of his premature birth, according to hospital reports.

Shortly afterwards, two babies in the same unit died on 2 March. They appear to have died from the same infection; however the hospital stated that they are still waiting for confirmation of the cause of death. A fourth baby has been found to have the bacteria on his skin, but as yet there is no confirmation of whether he has been infected. The hospital states that although the baby is in a serious condition, this is to be expected when a baby is born so premature, and that his condition is also due to other factors, unrelated to the bacterium, which have arisen since his birth.

The hospital authorities have asserted that all of the babies in its care are under close supervision, and are being periodically monitored by the Preventive Medicine Centre, in order that the most up-to-date information may be had on the state of any and all patients in the hospital.

To prevent further infections, the hospital has taken several measures. The first is of course rigorous medical hygiene. High-risk patients are referred to other hospitals. The hospital has been divided into two separate zones, one for those already infected and the other for those who have not yet been affected. As a consequence, 25 children who were staying in the hospital while the 3 premature babies died, remain separate from the others, to make sure newly admitted children are not exposed. The nursing staff has also been restricted to one or other of these two areas. Visits from specialists of other hospital services, and from families, has been restricted. Furthermore, an epidemiological study is being undertaken to determine the origin of the situation.

The newspaper El País reports that the bacterium Klebsiella pneumoniae is to be found in hospitals as a matter of course and is often contracted by those who have been in hospital for prolonged periods (termed a nosocomial infection). The mortality rate from the bacterium is extremely high in those cases where it’s contracted by people with serious illnesses, as is often to be expected in the case of a premature birth, which can result in newborn babies weighing less than 500 grammes.

According to the Spanish daily, this type of bacterium is prevalent in hospitals throughout the world, but the incidence of infection in Madrid hospitals is lower than the Spanish average. The head of the Neonatal Unit at 12 de Octubre Hospital, Carmen Payás, explained that the bacterium is very adaptable “and keeps on learning”. The father of the dead baby, an Ecuadorian named Angel Marcelo, was quoted as saying that the progress of the baby had at first been “tremendous”, and that he had even been taken off the respirator, but that a few days later he began to cough up blood, dying soon afterwards.

The chair of ADEPA, Carmen Flores, has appealed to the Madrid public prosecutor to open an investigation into the situation and to find those responsible. ADEPA have suggested that the investigation centre on the number of casualties among infants in the hospital, and on the question of whether conditions in the neonatal unit were a direct contributor to the incidence of the infection.

José Quero, head of the Neonatology Department of the La Paz hospital in Madrid said that, “sadly enough”, this situation was “not something exceptional,” but rather something neonatologists have to watch out for.

Skiing accidents can bevery dangerous in some cases. Most of the people in Toronto are ignorant of the legal rights if they happens to get into a skiing accident. One may get hold of numerous qualified personal injury lawyers in the city of Toronto who assist sufferers of accidents brought on by the negligence of other person. For a hurt person, accident is a extremely dreadful news since it not only produce the physical pain but he or she has to endure financial pain following an accident as he or she cannot go to work as a result injuries caused by the accident. Hence, an accident does not only affect you physically but it has an effect on your financial conditions as well. In these cases, sufferers have to go through different troubles following an accident. In most cases, the injured person gets a consultation from a qualified and experienced personal injury lawyer to get compensated for the pain and suffering, he or she endures because of the accident. Basically, individuals who have representation of a lawyer have the updated information of their legal rights. Hence, the role of a injury lawyer is vital for the success of a compensation claim.

The death of Natasha Richardson has proved that the skiing can sometime be very dangerous. A lot of people get hurt in skiing accidents in Canada but sometimes they do not consult with the experienced lawyer to see if you can file for a compensation claim. Thus, one must try to gain knowledge of the legalities associated with skiing and abide by the rules while skiing abroad. There are many people who make the mistake of thinking that buying adequate insurance coverage will protect them, with compensation if there is any skiing accident. This is not true, as in case the skiing accident occurs aboard where there is no insurance coverage then hiring a personal injury lawyer in Ontario will be the best choice. The personal injury lawyer will have a network of medical practitioners and rehabilitation centers and he will immediately refer upon for a medical checkup. On the other hand, the lawyer will also take care of all the legalities associated with attaining insurance coverage. If there has been any serious injuries and the medical cost are very high, the insurance company would refuse to provide coverage for the expenses and you would be stranded and left alone to pay for your own medical bills. In case the skiing accident occurred due to someone elses negligence, the lawyer will file a lawsuit against the individual. Therefore, they end up in accidents that may have many serious consequences. Even though the individual may not feel any pain at the time of the accident, but it is only after a medical examination, that the doctors will be able to ascertain if there have been any serious internal concussions. The personal injury lawyer will make sure that you get justice and adequate compensation so that you are to pay for your medical bills as well as other expenses for all kinds of medical and emotional traumaIn short, a skiing accident may affect you physically as well as financially, and you may file a compensation claim. Speaking to a lawyer will no doubt be significantly useful as there’s nothing to lose for you, because most often, they provide free consultation and take on your case on no win no fee basis. Moreover, you will need to make certain that the lawyer has a significant practice in representing the skiing accident victims. Consulting with a personal injury lawyer can help conclude your rights and it will help to make a choice if you should accept the compensation offer awarded by the insurance company or you should file a case in the court to get the compensation you should receive under the personal injury law.

UK PM’s speechwriter awaits sentence

July 29th, 2022

Wednesday, August 29, 2007

An English lawyer has pleaded guilty to perverting the course of justice. He faked a legal judgment and sent it to a father who was pleading in Taunton family court to be able to remain involved in his child’s upbringing. The lawyer, London barrister Bruce Hyman, now awaits his sentence. The judge indicated that he could receive a prison sentence. Bruce Hyman is well-known in media circles, having produced The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy on BBC Radio. He also produced a series with Clive Anderson, at Above the Title Productions, called Unreliable Evidence.

The father, a former City financier, had attended a series of court hearings in order to make suitable arrangements to see his child following an acrimonious divorce. Shortly before one of these hearings he received an email, ostensibly from a self-help group to which he belonged, which had attached a Court of Appeal case that appeared favourable to an application he had made for the judge to stand down from the case. The father, who was representing himself, duly showed the case to the judge. At this point, Bruce Hyman, the lawyer representing the former wife, claimed to the judge that the case was a forgery, which indeed it turned out to be.

After confirming that the self-help group had not sent him the email, the father then embarked on some detective work his own. The fraudulent email was traced via its header to a dial-up internet connection and a phone number belonging to a shop in London. The shop was able to recover CCTV footage which showed a man sending the email from an Apple laptop. The man turned out to be Bruce Hyman.

Sentencing of Hyman is due in Bristol Crown Court on the 19th of September.
