The shower has been possibly one of the most innovative features ever created for the bathroom. Not only does a shower session reinvigorate the body but they are far more economical than baths, also people favour the speed in which you can take a shower.

They come in styles to suit every type of bathroom. Also for those more adventurous you can purchase shower towers which feature strategically placed body jets that can actually massage your body in much the same way as a whirlpool bath does. Then of course for those with a little more budget you have the steam shower which features a vast array of options to make you thoroughly enjoy your washing and bathing experience.

Shower controls also offer a bewildering choice, but the important thing is to have a thermostatic control to maintain the water temperature no matter what other appliances are being used in the house.

If you have the space, install a separate shower cubicle rather than having one over the bath. If you have no choice but to combine the two, choose a bath that is as wide and flat-bottomed as possible. This will enable a much more emphatic shower experience.

Shower cubicles come in a vast range of styles and materials, some with accessories such as seats and towel rails, but they can be difficult to integrate well into an existing bathroom. I saw the Grand Canyon glass walkway gleaming beneath the desert sun. The 4,000-foot descent takes you through 3 cycles of geological time before coming to a landing. Maverick Helicopter’s dirt helipad was near the legendary Colorado River. It’s humbling when you consider that this river single-handedly made the Grand Canyon. I got out of my reverie and joined up with the rest of the group for a Champagne brunch.Our pilot agreed to guide us about the base (we were also able to explore on our own). I chose to go out with him. I’m glad I did. If not I would have had my head buried in my guidebook. Maverick also provides a chopper trip that lets you prolong a bottom landing with a smooth-water rafting trip down the Colorado.The flight back is fantastic. We re-visited Lake Mead and Hoover Dam and then deviated northward and strafed the Valley of Fire. This region is made up of vibrant orange sandstone. It is a unique place and I’ve never quite seen anything like it. One traveler said it reminded him of Moab, UT.Our return took us over the Las Vegas Strip. This is one more of those Maverick benefits. We hovered above the skyline. To my left, I saw the Planet Hollywood, Paris, MGM Grand, the Wynn, and more. On the ground, I opted to purchase my tour on DVD. Classic Jazz Artists: Indubitable Singers

It has never been easy to be a jazz singer. This is certainly true of those first men and women who stepped on the stage. These were classic jazz artists but many people chose to forget their contribution and focused overwhelmingly on the band. To some authorities, jazz was the music not the singer. In fact, they questioned the existence of a jazz singer at all. The exception perhaps, being Al Jolson (1886-1950) in his movie “The Jazz Singer,” which took a different and dramatic version of Jazz, Blues and popular music to the movies in 1927.

Big Band Vocalists/Classic Jazz Artists

While Jolson remained the favorite of the American public, he was not the only jazz singer around. Time saw the rise of an entire flotilla of men and women during the Big Band Era which combined with the Swing Era. This was the period from the 1920s to the end of the Second World War. It saw the rise and fall of many major classic jazz artists including:

Some are rarely mentioned in outside of jazz music circles these days. This includes Helen Forrest who was well known during her era as being the girl singer for three of the most famous and recognizable bands of the period: Artie Shaw, Benny Goodman and Harry James. Her performance and acceptance by all three big bands of the time earned her the appellation of “the voice of the name bands.”

These jazz artists worked hard at what they did. They toured for extended periods of time. Many became popular singers for the period, although some since have been downgraded to popular singers e.g. Nat King Cole, Doris Day and Dean Martin.

Death of an EraAfter World War Two Jazz evolved and the Bid Bands petered out. There were revivals but the focus in the music was on exploration of jazz tempos. The music became frantic at times and wandered off into the stratosphere with the works of Mikes Davis and John Coltrane. Classic jazz artists – both men and women also took new paths. Some explored the realms of popular music while others began to experiment with their voices in other ways.

While the ranks of jazz singers were on the decline during the 1970s and 1980s, they have since rebounded. Today, while only a few can consider themselves classic jazz artists, many follow in the old tradition. It may not be Big band or Swing, but they touch on it. Some, such as Sylvia Brooks and Diane Krall are worth noting for their repertoire that sometimes recalls the past glory of the classic jazz singers.

Sometimes titled “Jazz Noir” Sylvia Brooks takes to the stage with a torch in her voice. Like many of her contemporaries, Sylvia Brooks has learned well from the Classic Jazz Artists. Gas Bbq Grills: A Range Of Features

Gas BBQ grills have earned a rightful place in the backyards and on the porches and patios of people all over the country, indeed, around the world. With good reason too. They are convenient and reliable.

I went on a quest to the store today to really take a close look at the gas BBQ grills they had there. It was pretty interesting to actually see first hand the many differences. I went to one of the big box stores, where I knew there would be a decent selection. The lower end grills were pretty basic and didn’t have some of the features I really like in a grill. On the other hand, the really high end sported features that I couldn’t care less about. Here’s some of what I discovered.

If you consider gas BBQ grills from least to most expensive you get a feel for the differences without much effort at all. The cheapest ones were small, had fewer burners, smaller temperature gauges, and thin metal tops. These certainly do the job of cooking up your veggies and meats, but they don’t offer a lot of bells and whistles. As you go up in price you start to discover small improvements. For example, the diameter of the handle used to open and close the lid top got bigger. This makes the unit seem better somehow. You also notice that the way you access the propane tank makes more sense. The cheaper grills often have some wimpy lifty thingy (that’s a technical term) that would drive anyone batty trying to manage while getting to the tank valve. No thanks! The gas BBQ grills that have doors that open, or can be accessed from the back make way more sense.

The nicest, and most expensive gas BBQ grills are heavy duty, have lots of features, and offer solid quality and longevity for the money. These, as well as some of the middle priced grills, often have side tables and side burners built-in. I didn’t think I would like having a side burner at first, but it turns out that it is actually pretty handy to have. We usually cook a side dish there while the other food is being grilled nearby. It makes it pretty handy, especially if you’ve taken your grill away from home. Corn on the cob, sauces, or even a creative desert can be prepared easily with a side burner. The cheap units just don’t offer that.

One final important note about gas BBQ grills worth mentioning is the grill surfaces themselves. I have discovered that the grill surface can make quite a difference in your food. There are some that are quite wide and allow the food to make more contact with it. Others have a more ridged, or pronounced surface that the food makes contact with. I prefer the later. I don’t like it when meats and veggies stick to the grill, and having less contact surface helps with this. Both are fine and can be managed with either cooking spray or aluminum foil.

Whether you get a small, cheaper unit, or move up to a more feature-rich, larger and expensive one, you are in for a treat. Gas BBQ grills help make the world go round.

The Industrial Revolution saws the birth of lathes that no longer relied solely on the power of two men. The two-man lathe was to be replaced by a powerful, new lathe. This was the engine lathe. It was to take a shorter of period of time before the CNC turning machine was to make its way into the industrial tool kit and lexicon. Yet, even then, some styles of lathes are still referred to as an engine lathe.

The Engine Lathe

The engine lathe is horizontally shaped, simply designed machine. It is a tool designed to cut and shape metal. It is a metal-turning machine. Its name is debated as it has been applied to both the product of its turning – an engine – earlier would have been a steam engine, or a reference to the fact that unlike its predecessors, this lathe was powered by an engine. To the proponents of the latter, the opposite of an engine lathe was a foot lathe.

The early engine lathe was a product of the industrial revolution but it did not stand still and be a slave to the steam engine. During the late 19th century and into the mid 20th, the movement was towards running the lathe using electric motors. This was to facilitate the ability to shape items with greater speed and accuracy. Out of this experimentation was to rise other advancements.

Technology and machine tools always seem to work in tandem. The next great advancement was in the invention of CNC technology. It was grafted onto lathes with the result being the CNC turning machine. It was still a lathe since “turning” describes the work traditionally performed on a lathe. Yet, the capabilities and quality of production had shifted with the adaptation of this new technology.

Names For Lathes

Turning machine is one name given to what was once simply referred to as a lathe. There are others that have emerged in conjunction with technological changes or perceived sophistication of the trade and lathe. Among them are:

  • Turning Machines – Machines that can turn and drill with equal ease
  • Turning Centers – Increased sophisticated combinations and uses of the once simple lathe
  • CNC Turning Center – A combination of a sophisticated lathe with an even more sophisticated computer system of running it. It produces a large amount of duplicate turned parts with both accuracy and speed.

Lathes have progressed from a simple engine lathe to a sophisticated CNC turning machine. Over the years, this popular and practical tool has made its way from the blacksmith shop to the busiest hive of industrial production without losing the basic fact that it is – no matter what the nomenclature – still a lathe.
