An Information Security Degree Endless Opportunities

Do you know where your sensitive information is or more importantly who is responsible safeguarding it? In all likelihood your personal, sensitive information is sitting in various computer databases throughout the country in all types of organizations.

Hopefully your information is being guarded over by diligent and educated information security professionals whose mission in life is to ensure that this information does not fall into the wrong hands.

As you may have ascertained, the work that these men and women perform is critical to our economy, our businesses and our government.

Have you ever considered a career in information security? If you are considering a degree in information security, try to begin with the end in mind. What level of degree do you wish to attain? An associate’s, bachelor’s or even a master’s degree?

An associate’s degree will likely impart a good amount of technical knowledge and allow for an entry level position to the graduate. Fortunately an associate’s degree can be acquired while working towards a bachelor’s degree.

A bachelor’s degree is generally considered the standard foundation from which a professional career is built and will of course open many more doors than what would be expected from a two year degree.

Finally a graduate degree would best serve those who already have a healthy amount of industry experience, for those seeking management positions or even for those who already have an unrelated undergraduate degree and that are looking at making a career change.

In addition to earning a degree, a student may also earn various vendor neutral certifications in information security such as the Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) or the Systems Security Certified Practitioner (SSCP) offered by (ISC) which is largely regarded as a standard in the industry. The Security certification offered by CompTIA would also be a good credential to attain.

There are of course specific certifications which are designed to capitalize on technologies provided for by vendors, such as Symantec or Cisco Systems. Some degree programs may even require or at least provide training specific for these certifications which will look great on a resume next to a degree. So consider this in evaluating potential schools.

Information security is an up and coming profession holding a bright future for those working within the information technology industry. Due to the specialized skills and training required combined with the increased demand for these skilled professionals job opportunities are expected steadily grow.

For those potential students who would like to work with technology and computers, information security is one specialization that should be strongly considered due to the culmination of industry growth, job security and compensation.

The Cost Of Not Doing Home Maintenance: Cleaning Your Refrigerator

I still remember the old monster of a Norge refrigerator that hummed away in my grandmother’s kitchen. It was easily 20 years old when I was born – and when we moved ten years later, it was still going strong. Long after friends’ parents had replaced their refrigerators – some of them even twice – Nana’s Norge was freezing foods solid and keeping milk fresh and unspoiled.

Nana’s secret wasn’t the brand of refrigerator she picked – it was in her cleaning routine. Part of Nana’s household cleaning schedule was a weekly refrigerator cleaning. The truth is that by adding a few simple steps to your regular household cleaning schedules, you can save money on your electric bill, prolong your refrigerator’s life and save yourself the expense of spoiled food and a repair bill when the fridge goes on the fritz.

Step 1: Clean the condenser coils and condenser fan twice a year.

The condenser coils are what keep the fridge cold. If they’re clogged with dust, they can’t work efficiently. The end result will be a refrigerator that doesn’t keep cold foods cold, and an overworked motor that will need service more often – as well as a few dollars more on your electric bill each month.

The coils are located either at the back of the refrigerator, or across the bottom of the front. If they’re in front, you’ll need to pop the grille off to get to them. If they’re in back, just pull the refrigerator away from the wall. You can use a vacuum to clean them, but one of the best investments you can make is a refrigerator coil brush, which is specifically designed to get into all the crevices and spaces to gently clean away the dirt and dust.

If the coils are located on the bottom front, there’s also a condenser fan (back coils don’t need one, since they’re exposed). You can access it from either the front or the back of the refrigerator, and clean it with the coil cleaning brush.

Wipe down the door gasket.

That’s the rubber seal around the door of your fridge. It seals the refrigerator tightly and keeps cold air in and warm air out. Spilled sticky stuff can stick the gasket to the refrigerator frame, and when you open the door, it may tear. Replacing a torn gasket can run you as much as $200. Whenever you clean the kitchen, make it a practice to open the fridge door and wipe the gasket down with warm water and a sponge.

Step 3: Keep vents and drip channels clear and clean.

Frost free freezers have small air vents to allow air to circulate and keep things cold. If those become clogged or blocked by food packages, air can’t circulate and keep things frozen. Keep the freezer no more than about 3/4ths full, and make sure that food isn’t blocking the vents.

In refrigerator section, there are drip channels that drain off water that’s evaporated in the defrost cycle of your refrigerator. The channels lead to holes that drain into the drip pan. If the holes get clogged, water will collect and cause mold, odor and spoilage.

Step 4:

Clean the refrigerator thoroughly once a month.

-Remove all food and store in a cooler.

-Pull out drawers and racks and put in the tub with soapy water to soak.

-Wipe down walls and floor of refrigerator and freezer with water and baking soda. If you have

tough stain or spilled food, toothpaste or a degreaser can help.

-Wipe inside dry with soft cloths or paper towels.

-Clean door gasket.

-Clean the outside of your refrigerator and protect it with a spray appliance cleaner and wax

-Replace shelves, racks and drawers.

-Turn refrigerator on and let cool before replacing food.

Make Money While You Sleep: Why I Love Real Estate Investing

Money in real estate is what the big stories are made of, and why we stick with it despite the many challenges (and we’ve seen challenges from property managers robbing rent money from us, to fire code violations leading to court appearances). But, if you’re still thinking about investing in real estate and you haven’t yet, let me tell you what the best part about owning rental properties is: You Make Money in Your Sleep! Let’s look at the advantages, and just how you can close your eyes and make money:

* The leveraging advantage;

* Powerful Return on Investment (ROI);

* Tax write-offs;

* Tangible asset class;

* Residual income/equity building; and

Real Estate Advantage: Leverage.

In a nutshell, this refers to the idea of using OPM (other people’s money) to help purchase property. In most cases, we obtain a mortgage from a bank for upwards of 85% of the value of the property. This allows us to use less of our own money to build wealth thru appreciation, positive cash flow, and rent covering principal and interest repayment. There are not too many other investment options that allow us to invest in only 15-25% of the asset while obtaining 100% of the return.

Real Estate Advantage: ROI.

If you put down $25,000 on a $100,000 rental property, with 5% annual appreciation, approx. 2% principal payback, and 1% positive cashflow from your rent collected, that will earn you $5,000 + $2,000 + $1,000 = $8,000 in your first year. Divide this into your original down payment of $25,000, your first year ROI is 32%! Just imagine what your ROI would be if the property appreciated 10% in a year (if you guessed 52% you’d be right)!

Real Estate Advantage: Tax write-offs.

Of course, you should speak with your accountant before determining exactly what you can and can’t write-off, but there are plenty of expenses that you can write off when you own real estate. A few of these items include: interest paid on the mortgage, operating costs such as heat, hydro, insurance, property management, even some of your closing costs can be written off. In addition, your accountant may even advise you to depreciate your building which helps at tax time too!

Real Estate Advantage: Tangible asset class.

Owning a rental property is owning something tangible. You can kick it, smell it, touch it, and I suppose even taste it (not advisable but you could)! Buying 100 shares in a company is really just a paper-based asset. Financial trouble or internal turmoil are not immediately apparent to the shareholders. Did the CEO just sell all his shares? You don’t know until you read about it in the paper. Now, I am not saying not to put your money in the stock market. I proudly own shares in many different companies. I am simply saying that if you are wondering how your property is doing, go do a drive-by or ask a friend to. Order an appraisal to check it’s current market value. I love the idea that at any given time, I know what is going on in my property.

Real Estate Advantage: Making Money while you Sleep.

As the title of this article suggests, real estate allows you to build equity, and if you have positive monthly cashflow, make money even while you sleep! You don’t have to work at real estate everyday like a regular job. If you buy well and manage (or hire a property manager to manage) the property well, you will make money on it without working on it very often. Even if the market is depressed a property where the rent covers the costs still makes money even if the value has depreciated.

Real Estate Advantage: Limited land supply.

The amount of land we have on Earth is limited. It’s even more limited in all the world’s major cities. Yes, urban sprawl tends to push out cities boundaries, however, there is a limit to how far people want to live away from a city’s downtown core (or wherever the majority of workplaces are located). Because of this, land value will always increase over the long run. Supply and demand is a powerful theory especially when it comes to real estate. My parents used to live not far from where my wife and I live now. Thirty-five years ago, houses in this area were selling for a meager $20,000. Now, houses are selling for $700,000 to over $1 million! Imagine if you bought 3 houses putting $5,000 down on each 35 years ago. Your $15,000 would now be valued around $2,000,000!. How’s that for ROI?

How To Grow Japanese Red Maple Trees From Seed

Most Japanese Maple seeds ripen in the fall. Watch the tree and wait for the seeds to turn brown. The seeds are ready to be harvested when they are brown and can be easily removed from the tree.

The seeds are attached to a wing, it’s best to break the wing off before storing or planting the seeds. Japanese Maple seeds have a very hard outer coating as do many ornamental plants. Under natural conditions the seeds would have to be on the ground for almost two years before they would germinate. All that happens the first winter is the moisture softens the hard outer shell, and the second winter germination is beginning to take place.

In order for all of this to happen in the proper sequence so the seedlings actually sprout at a time of the year when freezing temperatures or hot summer sun doesn’t kill them, takes a tremendous amount of luck.

You can improve the odds by controlling some of these conditions, and shorten the cycle. Once you have picked the seeds and removed the wing just place them in a paper bag and store them in a cool dry place until you are ready for them. You don’t want to plant your seeds out in the spring until the danger of frost has past. Here in the north May 15th is a safe bet.

If May 15th is your target date you should count backwards on the calendar 100 days. That will take you to about February 5th if my math is correct. On or about the 100th day prior to your target planting date, take the seeds and place them in a Styrofoam cup or other container that will withstand some hot water. Draw warm to hot water from your kitchen faucet and pour it over the seeds. Most of the seeds will float, just leave them in the water overnight as the water cools down. 24 hours later most of the seeds will have settled to the bottom of the cup.

Drain off the water. Place the seeds in a plastic bag with a mixture of sand and peat or other suitable growing mix. Even light potting soil will work. The peat or soil should be moist, but not soaking wet. Poke some holes in the bag so there is some air circulation, and place the bag in your refrigerator for a period of 100 days.

After 100 days you can plant the seeds outside. If you have timed it correctly, you should be at or close to your target planting date.

To plant the seeds just sow them on top of a bed of well drained topsoil or sterilized potting soil, and cover with approximately 3/8′ of soil. Water them thoroughly, but allow the soil to dry out completely before watering thoroughly again. If you water them frequently, not only do you stand a chance of the seeds rotting from being too wet, but you will also keep them cool, which will slow down the germination process.

Once they start to germinate provide about 50% shade to keep the sun from burning them. Snow fence suspended about 30′ above the bed will provide about 50% shade. Japanese Maples will tolerate some shade so it isn’t too important to transplant them too quickly. Depending on how close together they are, you might be able to leave them in the same bed for one or two growing seasons. Don’t transplant until they are completely dormant.

Bank Of England Holds Base Rate At .5% For 23rd Month

Despite pressure brought about by rising inflation, with the retail price index for 2010 standing at 228.4. It has not been this high since 1979 when the base rate varied between 14 and 17 percent. Inflation is quite a concern for the monetary policy committee (MPC) with two of the nine members voting for a rate rise and one more voting for more quantitative easing (QE). With the rise of the Consumer Prices Index (CPI) to 3.7% which is considerably higher than the 2% which is the target rate.

The MPC are torn between raising the base rate in order to try to slow down inflation or to keep it low to try to aid the economic recovery. The decision not to increase it this month was probably swayed by virtue of the fact that high inflation is currently being driven by high commodity prices and the hike in VAT, which means that a hike in the interest rates would not have had the desired effect. Add to that the basic need to get the economy back onto an upward trend, didnt really leave them with many alternatives.

So why is the rate of inflation so important?

Keeping the inflation rate down is very important because high inflation reduces the value of the pound, also once inflation gets hold of the economy it is extremely difficult to shake it off. Prices go up which means that we want an increase in our pay so we can cope with it, which means that manufacturers increase their costs driving further increases in inflation.

Why has the low base rate not meant more borrowing?

Although the base rate has been low since March 2009 the rates that are charged by the lenders and credit card companies have been considerably higher. This is primarily because the banks are frightened that they will not get their money back when they lend it, so they build a buffer into the rates that they charge to ensure that they remain in profit.

Another factor in the banks decision not to increase the base rate was probably the fact the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) contracted by a half percent in the last three months of last year, causing fear that we were slipping back into recession.

So What is GDP?

GDP is a three monthly measure of the state economy over the three months just gone, and it can be measured in three ways.

Output measure: This is a measure of the total value of goods and services produced by every sector of the economy.

Expenditure Measure: This is a measure of the amount of money spent on goods and services, including the net value of exports i.e. exports minus imports.

Income measure: This is a measure of the total amount of income generated mainly from salary and profits.

The problem with the GDP is it shows what has happened in the past and not what is happening now and what we can expect in the future.
