Why Buy Brazilian Cowhide Rugs?

By Simon Tuft

A cowhide rug can be a beautiful addition to any room, especially if you know how to accent the room so that the rug is showcased perfectly. It used to be that most people believed that cowhide rugs were simply too rustic for a well decorated room, but now there are many different styles of cowhide rugs being sold, including ones that are designed with a bit of flair and with different shapes and shades. If you’re looking for a cowhide rug, most designers say that you should stick with Brazilian cowhide rugs. Why should you stick with these types of rugs specifically? There are a couple of important reasons.

Where Rugs Come From

There are a few different places that are known for being the best manufacturer of cowhide rugs. The first is, of course, the United States. The US is one of the largest suppliers in the world of cowhide rugs and come in a variety of different sizes, colors, and textures. While getting a US made cowhide rug is fine, designers insist that the best place for getting a rug is to purchase one from Brazil.

Brazilian Rugs

The difference in Brazilian rugs is that they are made using chromium tanning. When you’re dealing with rugs, the tanning is the important part. A rug that is tanned incorrectly or poorly will feel scratchy and may eventually begin to molt or smell. A rug that is tanned properly, however, will last for generations and will smell and look beautiful for a very long time. There are different ways to tan a hide, and the most sought after hides are tanned using chromium tanning.

In order to do this type of tanning, chromium sulfate is applied to the hide as soon as it is ready to be tanned. The pH of the material is raised in a process known as basification. Because of the chemicals in the mix, the tanned skins become blue. Designers and creators of these skins say that because of the chromium, the tans become much more soft and supple than they would be if they were tanned using the vegetable tanning process and that they tan much faster, taking less than a day to soak in the chromium, whereas it takes a few days for vegetable tanning to be completed.

While it is possible to find chromium tanned rugs from the United States, the leading provider of this type of rug is Brazil. Brazilian cowhide rugs have become highly sought after by designers because they are so soft and so supple. Brazilian designers have also mastered the art of transforming the hide from looking traditional into looking extraordinary, using dyes and stitching the leather together. If you’re looking for a cowhide rug for your home, check out the many different Brazilian cowhide rugs that are available to purchase from. They are the softest, most supple and enjoyable rugs that you can find on today’s marketplace, especially if you purchase a genuine Brazilian cowhide rug.

Plant explosion in Apex, North Carolina

Friday, October 6, 2006

Up to 17,000 people are being evacuated in Apex, North Carolina after a chlorine gas leak occurred during a Hazardous Waste facility explosion and fire.

Residents are advised to keep windows closed, turn off all air conditioning and that tenderness of the mouth, gagging and nausea are typical signs of poisoning. They are advised to stay away from the fire and any smoke, as it could be a health hazard. CNN reports that air quality tests run by the NCDENR indicate nothing especially harmful in the air near the plant.

Area residents are being advised to call 919-856-7044 for general information as 911 lines are overloaded. Bruce Radford, manager of the town in suburban Raleigh, said that the business district, schools and the town hall will remain closed on Friday.

No fatalities have been reported. WRAL-TV reported that 90 residents of a nearby nursing care facility were moved to a local hospital as a precautionary measure. About 20 Apex residents were reported to have been treated and released for respiratory symptoms related to exposure.

Officials are presently unsure of the cause. The fire and subsequent explosions started sometime after 9 p.m. EST Thursday, October 5.

Changing weather conditions in the area threaten additional evacuations. A section of State Highway 55 has been shut down near the incident.

The company, Environmental Quality of Wayne, Michigan, had been warned and fined $32,000 by state regulators in March of 2006 for hazardous conditions at the plant, which temporarily stores hazardous materials including chlorine, pesticides, and PCBs.

WRAL-TV reports that Sulfur, Oxidizers, Chlorine, Pesticides and PCBs were stored in the facility.

Fire crews from Cary, Apex, Raleigh, Wake County and Fairview are assisting in the effort. However, there is no effort to fight the fire as it would be too dangerous to firefighting personnel. It will eventually burn itself out.

US VX nerve gas disposal test a success

Monday, May 9, 2005

Workers at Newport Chemical Depot in Indiana have completed a successful test-run of a chemical reactor designed to dispose of Cold War stockpiles of VX nerve agent.

After encountering initial difficulties when the temperature in the reactor grew too high, workers were able to adjust the speed of the device. 180 gallons of VX and water were turned into a caustic but far less lethal compound, that can be further reprocessed into an inert substance.

A residue of 14 parts VX per billion remained; the Army’s eventual goal is less than 20 parts. One drop of VX can kill a grown man.

The conversion of the VX stockpiled at the facility is projected to take two years. Then the drain cleaner-like waste product with its small residue of VX will need to be sent to another facility for reprocessing into a safer, biodegradable compound.

A controversial plan has Dupont doing the reprocessing at their facility in New Jersey, and dumping the compound into the nearby Delaware River.

Gerald Summers Furniture

By Jessica Whittaker

Gerald Summers was one of the most innovative and brilliant artists of our time. Born in 1899 in Alexandria in Egypt, he was the last born in a family of six children. His father, a Presbyterian missionary, took him to Eltham College located in the south eastern part of London where he commenced his education. His classes majored on principles in Christianity coupled with carpentry.

It is at Eltham College that Gerald’s talents became noticeable. He not only became one of the best students, but also outshined others in designing and carpentry. This was just an advent of his iconic ability in the field of carpentry. His curriculum in the institution included instruction in furniture design, of which he proved himself an above average student.

Later, in 1915, Gerald left school at the age of 16. At this time he had no distinct plan for his immediate future. His father then arranged and encouraged him to pursue an apprenticeship through a family friend who practiced at the Ruston engineering firm. This firm, which was in partnership with Proctor and Company Limited, dealt in the manufacturing and distribution of industrial and agricultural machinery. Gerald’s apprenticeship in this firm was cut short when he joined the army during the First World War. He later came back and married Marjorie Butcher, who became his partner in business. To celebrate their union, Gerald made Marjorie an elegant table as a gift. The table served as an introduction to his career.

His start into carpentry was never milk and butter. The future seemed hazy for him, so he began making simple furniture together with his wife as a partner in 1929. The furniture generally embraced the then contemporary style. Four years later Morton Shand, who was an editor of reviews pertaining to architecture, organized for an exhibition at the Mason and Fortnum department store in London. It was arranged to exhibit Summers’ and Alvar Aalto’s designs, which were more than magnificent to the visitors.

The public approval at the exhibition made Summers specialize in malleable and free-form designs. He designed an airplane plywood which gave birth to some of the most creative and innovative designs. He also made a signatory artifact known as the plywood armchair, which mystified his ability of folding, bending and moulding wood to achieve high standards of flexibility. Summers could transform a given wooden material into a totally diverse and different seamless piece of furniture with a glossy surface, combined with a modernistic touch on life.

Summers’ firm was eventually closed during World War Two, but the elegant dent left by Summers’ work was still evident. His designs in plywood had a stern reservation for elite utility within the army. The government of Britain reacted and placed measures against the importation of plywood, leading to the immediate closure of the factory in 1939.

Summers’ furniture is widely appreciated in the current architectural world. He is still celebrated as an icon of impressive furniture designs. Summers died in 1967, but his dent on creativity is indelible and unforgettable.

Rapper Proof (D12) shot and killed outside Detroit nightclub

Tuesday, April 11, 2006

Rapper Proof, born Deshaun Holton, was shot and killed on April 11, 2006, at approximately 4:30 a.m. EDT (0830 UTC) at the Triple C Club on 8 Mile Road in Detroit.

Proof was known for his work together with his good friend Eminem and his group D12.

Another man was shot shortly afterward, and was taken to St. John Hospital.

On April 12, 2006, Mario Etheridge, 28, of Detroit turned himself in to the police, having been named by several witnesses. Mario was allegedly a bouncer at the club. “Police said he is a cousin of Keith Bender Jr., the bouncer who was allegedly shot by Proof during the fight.” The fight that started inside the club was reported to be over a pool game. The argument was taken outside where, “A shot was fired in the air, Proof allegedly pistol-whipped Bender, knocked him to the ground and then shot him. Etheridge then allegedly opened fire on the rapper, striking him four times in the head and chest. One week later, Keith Bender Jr. died of his injuries on April 18, 2006.

Official Police reports are yet to determine the series of events which left Proof and Keith Bender, 35, deceased. Bender died 8 days later on April 18, 2006. Following Proof’s death, rapper Snoop Dogg called on fellow musicians to unite, describing the incident as “a loss to the hip-hop community”.

The tributes were led by fellow rapper The Game who was first to comment on the tragedy. The Game remembers how he and Proof became ‘real cool and real homies’ and that ‘Proof will always be remembered and I as well as the Black Wall Street family will keep his memory & his family in our prayers 1’. The second to comment on Proof was long time friend Royce da 5’9″ who was deeply saddened by the death of his good friend. Royce had been a friend of Proof for over 9 years and the two had recently reconciled. Royce echoed the music community, saying ‘He is such loss for the hip hop community…I hope that he will be remembered for the talented artist and great person that he was, and not the tragedy that he fell victim to’.

Eminem was the third to discuss Proof’s death days after his passing, clearly affected by the tragedy. Eminem described Proof as “funny, smart and charming” and said that he would be sorely missed and described him as “the heart and ambassador of Detroit hip-hop”. Eminem said that Proof was, and always will be, his best friend.

Tributes poured out of the UK with Vm2k6 leading the remembrance. Proof’s demise which was mainly overlooked by the UK media was documented and reflected by VM2k6 in which he calls Proof ‘fresh, talented and meaningful, a rarity in Hip Hop today’. He continues saying that Proof had ‘the greatest ability to transfer his experiences and most of all feelings into words’ and finished with the heartfelt line- ‘I guess its only in Death you really begin to shine’.

Several fan videos were released in tribute to Proof, including the hit “Good Die Young” music video which used D12’s 2004 single, which is currently one of the highest discussed and viewed videos on YouTube.com. Many other “slide show” flicks were created, which are appearing all over the internet. The “Good Die Young” clip was produced by RYKE Video Productions.

Proof stated how he wanted to be remembered in an interview with Sohh.com shortly after his album release; ‘I want people to say that I was a true artist’, ‘ That I did it best and stayed true to Hip Hop roots’ and ‘I’d want people to understand I did it for the love not for the charts.’
