Lobby groups oppose plans for EU copyright extension

Tuesday, February 26, 2008

The European Commission currently has proposals on the table to extend performers’ copyright terms. Described by Professor Martin Kretschmer as the “Beatles Extension Act”, the proposed measure would extend copyright from 50 to 95 years after recording. A vast number of classical tracks are at stake; the copyright on recordings from the fifties and early sixties is nearing its expiration date, after which it would normally enter the public domain or become ‘public property’. E.U. Commissioner for the Internal Market and Services Charlie McCreevy is proposing this extension, and if the other relevant Directorate Generales (Information Society, Consumers, Culture, Trade, Competition, etc.) agree with the proposal, it will be sent to the European Parliament.

Wikinews contacted Erik Josefsson, European Affairs Coordinator for the Electronic Frontier Foundation (E.F.F.), who invited us to Brussels, the heart of E.U. policy making, to discuss this new proposal and its implications. Expecting an office interview, we arrived to discover that the event was a party and meetup conveniently coinciding with FOSDEM 2008 (the Free and Open source Software Developers’ European Meeting). The meetup was in a sprawling city centre apartment festooned with E.F.F. flags and looked to be a party that would go on into the early hours of the morning with copious food and drink on tap. As more people showed up for the event it turned out that it was a truly international crowd, with guests from all over Europe.

Eddan Katz, the new International Affairs Director of the E.F.F., had come over from the U.S. to connect to the European E.F.F. network, and he gladly took part in our interview. Eddan Katz explained that the Electronic Frontier Foundation is “A non-profit organisation working to protect civil liberties and freedoms online. The E.F.F. has fought for information privacy rights online, in relation to both the government and companies who, with insufficient transparency, collect, aggregate and make abuse of information about individuals.” Another major focus of their advocacy is intellectual property, said Eddan: “The E.F.F. represents what would be the public interest, those parts of society that don’t have a concentration of power, that the private interests do have in terms of lobbying.”

Becky Hogge, Executive Director of the U.K.’s Open Rights Group (O.R.G.), joined our discussion as well. “The goals of the Open Rights Group are very simple: we speak up whenever we see civil, consumer or human rights being affected by the poor implementation or the poor regulation of new technologies,” Becky summarised. “In that sense, people call us -I mean the E.F.F. has been around, in internet years, since the beginning of time- but the Open Rights Group is often called the British E.F.F.

Water It’s Good For You!

By Kirsten Hawkins

Did you know that 70% of your body is water, your blood is 83% water and your muscles and brain is around 75% water? So it’s safe to say, water is important to your health.

Even a mild dehydration can affect your short-term memory, concentration and cause fatigue. Another thing many are unaware of is that keeping your body hydrated can reduce back and joint pain in as many as 80% of sufferers.

As a general rule, unless you have a medical condition that doesn’t allow you to, adults should drink 8 glasses of pure water every day. If you are overweight you should drink 1 glass extra for every 20 pounds you are overweight, and if you are working out you should add 1 glass for every 20 minutes of workout.

Water can improve your health in many ways, for those trying to loose weight, it helps suppress hunger, it helps your metabolism and when your body sees it is getting a constant supply of fresh water every day, it will release all the excess water it stored when supply was less frequent.

Other benefits include helping cleans your body of waste and toxins, improve your skin moisture, improves absorption of vitamins and nutrients, better digestion and increased energy levels.

The best source is pure water, depending on the quality of your tap water, you should consider attaching a water purifier to your tap, or get bottled water.

You should not count sodas and coffee against you water consumption, the 8 or more glasses should come in addition to other beverages you drink.

So, if you are suffering from e.g. headaches, dry skin, dizziness or constipation, you may be dehydrated, and should try drinking at least 8 glasses of pure water every day.

Tips to help you drink enough water

* Have water within reach at all times. Carry around a bottle of water when you are on the move.

* Add a little flavor to your water (e.g. lime or lemon) now and then for variety.

* Buy a water filter for your home, this will improve the quality and taste of your tap water and lower the cost if you normally only drink bottled water.

No more excuses, go get hydrated.

Note: This is not medical advice. You should always consult your doctor before making any big changes to your eating and drinking habits.

Broken pipes cause flood in Darwin D. Martin House in Buffalo, New York

Correction — February 13, 2008 The break was a broken sprinkler head in a crawl space above the shop, according to Jeffrey A. Salmon Facilities Manager of the Martin House Restoration Corporation. Not a pipe.

Tuesday, February 12, 2008

Buffalo, New York —According to radio communications by the Buffalo, New York Fire Department, at approximately 10:15 p.m. EST two water pipes inside the Darwin D. Martin House, a National Historical Landmark, broke causing several rooms to flood.

The breaks were discovered in the gift shop area of the house but quickly began to flood other areas near the shop as firefighters had a difficult time locating the main shut off valves.

At 10:50 p.m., firefighters reported to have shut off “several main valves” stopping the flow of water. The cost of the water damage is not known, but covered several rooms. Recent sub-zero temperatures in the city is said to be the cause of the break. At the time of the call, the temperature was only 10°F with a wind chill of 4°F above zero. On Sunday the temperature was only 3°F with a wind chill of -23°F.

The house, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, has seen rough times over the years, experiencing problems such as vandalism. The first half of the complex was built in 1903 and finished in 1905. After the pergola, conservatory, and carriage were demolished, restoration and rebuild began in 1992 and is scheduled for completion in 2008 or 2009.

US stock markets reach 12-year lows

Thursday, March 5, 2009

US stock markets dropped to twelve-year lows on Thursday, amidst falling confidence in the financial sector and worries over whether the US automobile manufacturer General Motors will be able to keep operating.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped by 4.08%, or 280.52 points, at the closing bell, reaching a level of 6595.32, a new 12-year low. The Nasdaq Composite lost 54.15 points, or 4%, to 1299.59, while the Standard & Poor’s 500 plunged by 30.27 points, or 4.25%, closing at 682.60.

Every stock in the Dow Jones, other than Wal-Mart, either lost ground or remained even, and all stocks in the S&P 500 index lost ground.

General Motors’ shares lost 15.5% after the auto firm announced that its auditors had “substantial doubt” over whether it would be able to keep operating.

Shares of financial companies were lower by nine percent, with Bank of America losing 11.7% and Citigroup falling by 9.7%.

“What’s most worrisome is that we haven’t hit the crescendo yet,” said Bill Groeneveld, the head trader for vFinance Investments. “Asset-management divisions are getting calls to just liquidate everything, and we haven’t seen the big players come back in at all.”

“This is one of the worst bear markets in the last 100 years; it started out with the credit crisis and the subprime [loans], but it is like a forest fire that has raced across the clearing and ignited other parts: Autos, auto parts, the insurance companies have been hit very hard. The credit crisis is causing an unraveling of industry after industry because the banks don’t lend,” said David Dreman, the chief investment officer of Dreman Value Management.

European markets were also lower today, with the London’s FTSE index losing 3.2% and the DAX index of Germany falling by five percent.

Cambodian lawmaker calls for ASEAN website to be blocked over missing land

Saturday, June 2, 2007

Thirty-five square kilometers, or 13.5135755 square miles, or 3,500 hectares or 8,648.68835 acres.

However you figure it, it’s a sizeable chunk of land.

And it’s missing from Cambodia on the website for the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, or ASEAN, a 10-member regional body of which Cambodia is a member.

The apparent rounding down of Cambodia’s territory, 181,035 square kilometers, on the ASEAN website, has some Cambodian lawmakers up in arms.

Parliamentarian Keo Remy, a member of the opposition Sam Rainsy Party, is calling for the ASEAN website to be blocked by Cambodia’s Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications if the number is not corrected.

“We know that Cambodia has border disputes with its neighbors, and Khmer citizens are paying attention on these issues. We cannot accept such incorrect points. The most important thing is that the government should close this web site,” Keo was quoted as saying by the Khmer-language daily newspaper Kampuchea Thmey.

Though Keo acknowledged the error could be an honest, if careless, mistake, he said it could mean something more sinister – that ASEAN is trying to undermine Cambodia’s sovereignty, and that perhaps ASEAN is working for neighboring nations. It could even be treasonous, he said.

“If it was intentional and perpetrated by a Cambodian, this is treason. It is like not knowing your own parents,” Keo was quoted as saying by Deutsche Presse-Agentur.

Other lawmakers also called on the Cambodian government to take action.

“The royal government must react urgently, especially the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation,” Monh Saphan, a Funcinpec parliamentarian was quoted as saying by Kampuchea Thmey. “The website [must] be corrected, because it affects the territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Cambodia.”

And non-governmental organization leaders weighed in.

“The state’s figure is more important and appropriate than figures of other organizations. Therefore, we should urge the government to check this issue,” Seng Theary, executive director of the Center for Social Development, told Kampucha Thmey. “We also wonder where ASEAN got this figure.”

Kek Galabru, president of the Cambodian League for the Promotion and Defense of Human Rights, said that incorrect figure is most likely a mistake, but said the government should investigate it. “Otherwise a small problem might turn into a bigger issue,” she said.

Government spokesman and Information Minister Khieu Kanharith said he would investigate, and called for cooler heads in the meantime.

Border disputes are a hot-button political issue in Cambodia, which has some long-standing unresolved boundary conflicts with neighbors Thailand and Vietnam.

Cambodia joined ASEAN in 1999, the last country to gain admittance to the regional geo-political and economic body for Southeast Asia. It was founded in 1967 by Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore and Thailand. Other members are Brunei, Laos, Myanmar and Vietnam.

Weight Loss Surgery In Rhode Island}

Weight Loss Surgery in Rhode Island

by

Craig B. Thompson

Rhode Island the smallest state — has a big problem. That problem is obesity. Almost 59% of the population of the Ocean State is overweight or obese (18% obese, 39% overweight) according to data compiled by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control. And thats just the adults. 47% of 6-11 year olds, 27% of 12-17 year olds, and 24% of high school students are overweight or at risk for overweight as well.

Obesity kills people. It is the second most common cause of preventable death in the United States, and may lead to co-morbidities, which are serious medical conditions directly related to obesity. Common co-morbidities include sleep apnea, high blood pressure, heart disease, osteoarthritis, and Type II diabetes.

Its costing us, too — over $300 million every year to deal with obesity and related health problems — with approximately 60% of the total financed by good old John Q. Taxpayer.

This situation cant be allowed to continue. Its time Rhode Island fought back.

Obesity Is a Disease

Obesity is a disease a medical condition defined as being above a healthy weight. Healthy weight is calculated in terms of individual body mass index (BMI) a formula established by the National Institute of Health and the only way to reduce BMI is to reduce overall body weight.

But just losing weight doesnt cure the disease. Obesity is about more than just being fat or overeating. Obesity is a complex medical condition that requires comprehensive medical care. Shedding pounds relieves one symptom excess weight but only by making a complete change in lifestyle and eating habits can a patient succeed in reducing their BMI to safe levels.

Treatment comes in several forms. Most obese people respond well to a structured program of medically-supervised education and diet. For some, however, theres only one effective option: weight loss surgery.

About Weight Loss Surgery

The key to weight loss is eating less. Weight loss surgery is generally performed as a laparoscopic procedure in which a surgeon changes the patients stomach or digestive tract to limit the amount of food that they can hold. But weight loss surgery is not a fairy-tale cure for being fat. It is one part of a total medical treatment plan for obesity. Patients who ignore or improperly follow prescribed diet and lifestyle changes after surgery may regain any weight lost and/or experience undesirable health effects. The decision to undergo weight loss surgery is also irrevocable; currently, only the Lap-band procedure is reversible.

After years of medical research and advances in surgical technologies, weight loss surgery is generally minimally invasive and is not particularly dangerous except in rare cases. However, it does entail real risk, including the risk of complications and even premature death. Before making a decision, those considering bariatric surgery should consult with their primary care physician to analyze the risks and possible outcomes of any bariatric procedure.

Think Small!

Rhode Island is a small state full of big people. Thats not healthy. Sensible changes in lifestyle and diet along with weight loss surgery when necessary will put our state back at the bottom of the (obesity) list.

Weight loss surgery in Rhode Island

is a growing trend, since some 59% of the state population is overweight or obese. Visit online website for

U.S. House issues subpoena to secretary of state as special envoy to Ukraine resigns

Monday, September 30, 2019

Friday, the United States House of Representatives issued a subpoena for documents from Secretary of State Mike Pompeo as part of its impeachment investigation into alleged misconduct by sitting President Donald Trump. On the same day, Kurt Volker, the United States special envoy for Ukraine negotiations, resigned without public explanation. The House issued a deposition request for Volker, scheduled for this week.

Volker’s resignation was the first since details emerged about Trump’s call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Volker’s position as special envoy, an unpaid part-time role, put him in center of the Trump administration’s affairs in Ukraine. In July, he helped facilitate a meeting between Giuliani, claiming to represent the State Department, and Andriy Yermak, one of President Zelensky’s aides. Volker also worked to arrange a meeting between Zelensky and Trump himself during President Trump’s planned trip to Warsaw, which was cancelled.

The subpoena was issued jointly by Representatives Eliot Engel, Adam Schiff, and Elijah Cummings, who serve as chairmen of the House’s committees on Foreign Affairs, Intelligence, and Oversight and Reform, respectively. It follows repeated failed attempts to obtain documents from the State Department through previous document requests. Among other things, the House subpoenaed a full transcript of a call between Trump and then-newly elected President Zelensky in late July. It also called for records relating to the Trump administration’s temporary withholding of security aid to Ukraine, as well as files relating to attempts by Rudy Giuliani to encourage investigations into Democratic challenger former Vice President Joe Biden. Biden is one of the front runners for the Democratic Party’s nomination for president in the upcoming 2020 race. Giuliani was serving as Trump’s personal lawyer at the time. The New York Times reports that more subpoenas are likely to be issued in the coming week.

According to a whistle-blower complaint, Trump may have misused his office. Last week the White House released a summary of a phone call made by President Trump late last July to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. In it, Trump asks Zelensky to investigate Joe Biden and his son, Hunter Biden. Shortly before the conversation, Trump had ordered his staff to delay around US$400 million in military aid that had been slated for Ukraine, which is currently in a military conflict with Russia.

The accusation against Biden is that, during his time as President Barack Obama’s vice president, he called for the government of Ukraine to reduce corruption but at the same time interfered with an investigation into Burisma Holdings; Hunter Biden was on the board of the company at the time. An investigation by PolitiFact found no such action on Joe Biden’s part, and the investigation into Burisma had already been inactive for more than a year before Biden involved himself in Ukraine’s politics in this way.

Trump said that he did indicate to the Ukrainians that the aid was contingent on their addressing corruption but denied that he made any specific deal about the Bidens. “I put no pressure on them whatsoever,” he told the press. “I could have. I think it would probably, possibly have been OK if I did. But I didn’t. I didn’t put any pressure on them whatsoever.”

While in New York City to attend the United Nations General Assembly, President Zelensky told reporters, “Nobody can put pressure on me because I am the president of an independent state. The only one person by the way who can put pressure on me […] is my son, who is six years old.”

Regarding Trump’s phone call, former federal prosecutor Elie Honig said via Twitter: “If I got a transcript like the Trump-Ukraine call in a regular criminal case for bribery or extortion, I’d think, ‘Wow, I’m surprised they’re discussing this so openly and clearly.’ “

“The only conclusion I can reach after reading that devastating call summary is that Trump’s White House staff want him to resign or be impeached,” tweeted former thinktank executive Ken Gude. “That’s the only explanation I can come up with for why they would release this call summary.”

According to a poll published by NBC News last week, over 220 members of the House of Representatives favored some form of impeachment. One of the Representatives was an independent; the rest were from the Democratic Party. Together, the number of members is enough for the simple majority vote required by the United States Constitution to impeach an official. Some reported wanting to draft articles of impeachment, while others preferred an investigation by either the House Judiciary Committee or another body. Since then, a Republican, Mark Amodei, has publicly voiced support for the impeachment inquiry, telling the Nevada Independent: “I’m a big fan of oversight, so let’s let the committees get to work and see where it goes.” He continued by noting that “Using government agencies to, if it’s proven, to put your finger on the scale of an election, I don’t think that’s right […] If it turns out that it’s something along those lines, then there’s a problem.”

Under the U.S. Constitution, the House of Representatives impeaches the official and then the impeachment trial is conducted in the Senate. The only punishments an impeachment trial may lay down are removal from office and prohibition from holding office in the future. They do not impose fines or prison terms. No U.S. president has ever been removed by impeachment, but eight federal judges have. Two-thirds of senators must vote to convict in the trial for removal from office.

How To Sell Furniture

Click Here For More Specific Information On:

Submitted by: Bill William

Any person that has had their own home for more than just a couple of years knows perfectly well how surprisingly fast furniture can rack up, until a person has so much furniture to deal with that a lot of it ends up getting stowed away, sitting in the attic or a remote storage unit doing nothing but gathering dust (and requiring monthly payments)! It s no wonder then that so many people especially home owners are interested in discovering convenient and effective ways to sell their furniture whatever condition it happens to be in. There are several ways to go here, with a simple stop by your reliable furniture store being a classic option, as well as other possibilities to be found online or in the classifieds section.

Before taking any actual measures to go ahead and offload your furniture onto somebody else, make sure that you have done a bit of research and discovered what the suggested value of your furniture is. Overlooking this part of the process is the primary reason for which many people get ripped off when trying to sell their furniture: they don t know what they re peddling in the first place, and thusly are unaware that they are literally gifting it to the buyer (who will, on many occasions, be in awe of the supped deal they have come across). Look through any material you have from when you bought the particular item of furniture, and do some online searches to see if similar items come up with a general price range indicated. If your furniture was made by a renowned manufacturer or if it belongs to a period considered to be of value to collectors then you will surely have a strong bargaining position when time comes to sell.

The next step is to explore all possible avenues of sale that are open to you: only after discovering each way or place to sell your furniture will you have a good idea of where and how to get the best $ back on your pieces, and any sale would be premature if this is not the case. Get out to your local furniture store and talk to a few of the clerks on hand; go to a few antiques stores and talk to the owners or employees to see if they have an interest in your furniture items; put up some ads online at major auction sites like Ebay or a classifieds site like Craigslist. Make sure that you find more than one business or establishment in each of these categories to get a truly representative estimation of your furniture s worth and whether or not you have a reasonable expectation of making a successful sale.

Finally, it comes time to actually price your furniture. Don t be overzealous here selling furniture is no way to go making your first million, so don t price as if that were your plan. Remember, your intentions are most likely merely to free up some space and get rid of a storage bill, so price accordingly. Take the info you garnered from your snooping at the furniture store and so forth and use that as your barometer. Of course, make sure to account for any stains, scratches, or other damage evident and present in your furniture, as an unsatisfied buyer may demand a refund if you were less than honest in your description or fixed a price that corresponded to a piece in better condition.

Bollywood stars Aishwarya Rai and Abhishek Bachchan engaged

Monday, January 15, 2007

This article features in a News Brief from Audio Wikinews:

Legendary Bollywood actor Amitabh Bachchan has confirmed that his son Abhishek and former Miss World Aishwarya Rai were engaged last evening at a private ceremony at the Bachchans’ residence in Mumbai.

It is believed that the younger Bachchan proposed to his bride-to-be in New York, soon after the Toronto premiere of his new movie Guru. The media had been following the romance between the two closely for some time past, but this is the first time they have come out in the open about their relationship. Rumours that the couple were planning to spread the know began to spread in November last year, when they visited the Sankat Mochan Temple together, with some even saying that they had already been married even earlier at the Meenakshi temple in Madurai

According to one daily, the wedding will take place either on February 19 or March 7 at the Hyatt Mumbai. “The children have decided. We are very happy and thought we should go ahead with the ‘roka’ ceremony. It was held in the evening.”, Amitabh Bachchan said of the ceremony, which was attended by the family’s close friends, including Samajwadi Party leader Amar Singh, Aishwarya’s parents, and industrialist Anil Ambani and the latter’s wife Tina Ambani. The couple have now flown to Ujjain to take a holy dip in the Ganga.
