Slight Increase In Exercise Levels Will Greatly Reduce Irritable Bowel Symptoms

Slight increase in exercise levels will greatly reduce irritable bowel symptoms

by

Jeff Jurmain

A new study has found that exercising could help cut symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). These included abdominal pain and stool problems (constipation, diarrhea), as well as a lower quality of life overall. Score yet another one for physical activity, the one thing we can all do to help ourselves.

The study, based in Sweden, included 102 patients with IBS between the ages of 18 and 65. Half the patients were randomly chosen to increase their physical activity and the other half to maintain their usual lifestyle. Both groups received supportive phone calls from a physiotherapist. The active group increased their physical activity on their own, but with the advice of and support from the physiotherapist.

The exercising group was advised to perform “moderate to vigorous” physical activity for 20 to 30 minutes, three to five times a week. This is not a large amount of time, as you can see. But it’s just a half-hour every other day a week that could make a big-time difference in the state of your health.

At the start of the study, and again three months later, participants were asked to rate their different IBS complaints, such as abdominal pain, stool problems and quality of life. It was put on a scale of points assigned to symptoms. Those who did not change their lifestyle had an average decrease of symptoms of five points. Those taking up the physical activity had improved symptoms, with an average reduction of 51 points. This is a very considerable swing in favor of exercise.

Research also showed that the 23% of the people with an unchanged lifestyle had deteriorating symptoms. That compared to just eight percent of those in the exercise group. What’s more is that the measurement of fitness in the study showed a slight increase in the exercise group only. This means that even slightly boosting your level of physical activity could reduce symptoms and protect from deterioration.

The study, published in “The American Journal of Gastroenterology” has attracted great attention in the United States, United Kingdom and Sweden. It is time, IBS patients (and all the rest of us), to get moving.

Hundreds of thousands rally in Australia against IR legislation

Tuesday, November 15, 2005

People rallied in 300 locations across Australia today to protest the Federal Government’s proposed changes to industrial relations laws, WorkChoices. According to police, around 150,000 people congregated in Melbourne, from where speeches were broadcast throughout the country. In Sydney, thirty thousand gathered in Belmore Park and Martin Place to watch the broadcast before marching to Chifley Square.

Sharan Burrow, President of the Australian Council of Trade Unions (ACTU), said that under the changes many working conditions would be under threat, including “penalty rates, public holidays, overtime pay, control over rostered hours, shift penalties, even 4 weeks annual leave.” The government has claimed, despite various expert assesment to the contrary, and opposition from major Australian religious and charity organisations and some concern from its own backbench, that the IR changes will improve the economy and ultimately benefit workers, and dismissed the protests as having “little effect”.

Wikinews interviews Rocky De La Fuente, U.S. Democratic Party presidential candidate

Thursday, March 31, 2016

Businessman Rocky De La Fuente took some time to speak with Wikinews about his campaign for the U.S. Democratic Party’s 2016 presidential nomination.

The 61-year-old De La Fuente resides in San Diego, California, grew up in Tijuana, and owns multiple businesses and properties throughout the world. Since getting his start in the automobile industry, De La Fuente has branched out into the banking and real estate markets. Despite not having held or sought political office previously, he has been involved in politics, serving as the first-ever Hispanic superdelegate to the 1992 Democratic National Convention.

De La Fuente entered the 2016 presidential race last October largely due to his dissatisfaction with Republican front-runner Donald Trump. He argues he is a more accomplished businessman than Trump, and attacks Trump as “a clown,” “a joke,” “dangerous,” and “in the same category as Hitler.” Nevertheless, De La Fuente’s business background begets comparisons with Trump. The Alaskan Midnight Sun blog described him as the Democrats’ “own Donald Trump.”

While receiving only minimal media coverage, he has campaigned actively, and according to the latest Federal Election Commission filing, loaned almost US$ 4 million of his own money to the campaign. He has qualified for 48 primary and caucus ballots, but has not yet obtained any delegates to the 2016 Democratic National Convention. Thus far, according to the count at The Green Papers, De La Fuente has received 35,406 votes, or 0.23% of the total votes cast. He leads among the many lesser-known candidates but trails both Senator Bernie Sanders who has received nearly 6.5 million votes and front-runner Hillary Clinton who has just shy of 9 million votes.

With Wikinews reporter William S. Saturn?, De La Fuente discusses his personal background, his positions on political issues, his current campaign for president, and his political future.

6.4 magnitude earthquake hits Chile

Tuesday, May 4, 2010

Another earthquake hit Chile on late Monday, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) has reported. It occurred at 19:09:43 local time (23:09:43 UTC). The epicenter was located 110 kilometers northwest of Temuco; 132 kilometers southwest of Concepción; 203 kilometers north of Valdivia and 558 kilometers southwest of Santiago.

The USGS later determined that the earthquake had a depth of 20.6 kilometers, and the epicenter was located 55 kilometers to the south of Lebu.

The University of Chile Geological Survey reported that the earthquake took place 71 kilometers at the west of Tirúa in the Bío Bío Region and had a depth of 22.9 kilometers.

Wikinews’ Diego Grez reported that the earthquake was clearly felt in Pichilemu, almost 300 kilometers to the north of the epicenter. ONEMI reported no casualties. The area is being monitored by the organization. It has been reported that some telephone lines have collapsed after the earthquake. More than two months after the major 8.8 earthquake, many people continue to live in tents or temporary huts.
