Hundreds feared dead after Indian ferry boat capsizes

A double-decker ferry capsized late Monday in the Brahmaputra River near Guwahati, India. The ferry was over capacity when a storm caused it to overturn and break in half. The ferry passengers were mostly women and children. Officials estimate there are at least 200 casualties. Inclement weather hindered rescue attempts and as of Tuesday, 103 bodies have been recovered. No life jackets or lifeboats were aboard the ferry at the time of the event.

According to officials, many of the bodies may have floated 25 miles down river to Bangladesh, due to strong currents. The river is a vital source of irrigation and transportation to the people along its coast. It is approximately 1,800 miles long, making rescue efforts difficult to pursue quickly. Rescuers are working around the clock in efforts to locate any remaining survivors.

About 150 passengers swam to a nearby shore. The remaining passengers are missing and are feared dead. Reports indicate this is one of the worst ferry accidents ever recorded in India. Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh issued a statement expressing his remorse over the death of the passengers and announcing that he would compensate the next of kin of all casualties Rs 200,000, or about $4,000 US dollars.

1. Communicate Clear Objectives-Clearly state the purpose of new efforts and highlight the expected positive effects (cost savings, environmental impact, convenience, etc.)

2. Educate Employees on their Role-Change is difficult. To minimize growing pain, educate employees on how they fit into new programs. Each employee should have a defined role. The resulting sense of ownership will increase buy-in and participation.

3. Find a Champion-Recruit an employee to champion the cause within the company and have them work with others on a green team. It is best to have the green team report goals and results to their peers and leadership to grow the momentum and increase buy-in from all levels.

4. Set Tangible Goals-To maximize participation, set company-wide or departmental goals. Competitions can create a fun atmosphere and positive buzz about the new initiatives.

5. Monitor Progress-Routinely display company progress toward posted goals. Before starting the program, have your recycler conduct a waste audit to serve as a baseline for future comparisons.

6. Make it Convenient-Place bins in high traffic areas near office trash cans. This will create opportunities for action without adding steps to existing routines and processes. Also, the addition of desk side bins gives everyone the opportunity to participate.

7. Incentivize-Companies often provide budgetary, sales, and performance incentives. Why not do the same for recycling? Potential savings from recycling programs could offset this cost.

8. Take the Extra Step-Ask your provider to educate employees on the recycling process through literature, presentations, or even recycling facility tours. By understanding the steps in the process, employees will feel more invested in the success of the program.

9. Purchase Recycled-Products made from recycled materials are plentiful and can provide a full-circle view of the recycling process for employees.

10. Maximize Your Program – Ensure all that can be recycled is being recycled to meet your overall diversion and cost reduction goals. Consult your recycling rep in order to identify new items that can increase the volume (and cost savings) within your recycling program.
