Nigerian parliament votes to make vice president acting president

Wednesday, February 10, 2010

Goodluck Jonathan, vice-president of Nigeria, has become the country’s acting president after president Umaru Yar’Adua travelled to Saudi Arabia last November to receive medical treatment for a heart condition.

In a televised address, Jonathan commented, “I am fully aware of the responsibilities reposed in me, and I want to reassure all Nigerians that this is a sacred trust, which I shall discharge to my fullest abilities. […] The circumstances — in which I find myself assuming office today as acting president of our country — are uncommon, sober and reflective.”

He added, “[m]ore than ever therefore, I urge all Nigerians as a people who have faith in God to pray fervently for the full recovery of our dear president, and his early return”.Yesterday saw both houses of the Nigerian National Assembly approve a motion for Jonathan to become president until Yar’Adua is able to return. Under the country’s constitution, executive power can be transferred when parliament is formally informed by the president that he is absent. Yar’Adua apparently had not done so; however, senate leader David Mark said that Yar’Auda’s comments in an interview with the BBC last month were sufficient notice.

Some political analysts, however, have indicated the assembly’s move might not be legally binding, and could face a court challenge.

Marine Electronics and GPS Combine for Ultimate Fuel Efficiency

by

D Harper

One of the most useful investments for your boat could be a multifunction meter. This incredible marine electronics device serves a variety of functions, the most important of which is ensuring your boat has enough fuel to get where you are going and back again.

Multifunction Meters, such as the Floscan series, interface with your boat’s twin engine system and with GPS to give you an accurate accounting of nautical miles per gallon. This information is useful in a number of ways. It allows a savvy skipper to optimize fuel efficiency under a variety of different sailing conditions. Most importantly, you can determine exactly how much fuel you need to carry in order to sail a specific route. If you race yachts, information from a 5 lb marine electronics device can actually help you win the race! You figure out how much is exactly enough fuel to sail the race with the lightest possible gas tank. Racers and non-racers alike can determine how much fuel is left and how far their boat can go on what remains in the tank. GPS is a powerful tool in marine electronics design and provides an accurate measurement of how fast a boat is going. Because there are many GPS satellites in orbit around the earth, GPS provides global coverage. There is no such thing anymore as sailing into unchartered waters. When your position is accurately tracked it is easy to compute the exact speed you are moving. Multifunction meters incorporate GPS satellite signals with a fuel flow meter and a tachometer. The result is an instrument that can tell you exactly how much fuel you are using at different speeds. When you have an accurate measure of how much fuel you are using and how much you have remaining you can be confident in determining how far you can travel on your remaining fuel. This is, perhaps the most important thing a boat owner needs to know. Recreational boat owners who use a multifunction meter often report that they have come to depend on this important piece of marine electronics. Those who earn their living on the water, such as fishermen, report that the instrument helps them reach the weigh scales with a full load of fish. Marine electronics instruments, such as multifunction meters, are available for gas and diesel engines and can often be mounted right in the dashboard, replacing the existing tachometer, thus giving a clean look to your boat’s dashboard and avoiding the need to cut a new hold in the dash. Digital readouts with LCD backlit displays make them easy to read whether at night or during the day.

New Jersey to consider bikini waxing ban

Friday, March 20, 2009

New Jersey is considering a state-wide ban on Brazilian waxes, the removal of hair from the bikini area.

Although genital waxing has never really been allowed in the state, the New Jersey Board of Cosmetology and Hairstyling plans to propose a ban with more specific legal wording, in response to two women who reported being injured during a wax. The board will consider the proposal at their next meeting on April 14.

If the measure passes, New Jersey may become the only US state to ban the practice outright.

Although millions of Americans engage in bikini waxes, which generally cost between $50 and $60 per session, the practice comes with risks. Skin care experts say the hot wax can irritate delicate skin in the bikini area, and result in infections, ingrown hairs and rashes.

Waxing on the face, neck, abdomen, legs and arms would continue to be permitted in the state under the proposed ban. Although New Jersey statutes have always banned bikini waxing, the laws were unclear and seldom enforced.

As a result, many salons from around the state have offered bikini waxing for years. Many salon owners spoke out against the proposed ban, which they said would severely damage their business.

“I really don’t know if the state can stop it at this point,” said Valentia Chistova, owner of the Monmouth County salon Brazil. “I know a lot of women who are really hooked.”

Health Benefits And Disadvantages Of Alcohol

Click Here For More Specific Information On:

By Ethan Armitage

As confusing as it may seem, in small quantities, alcohol can be benefic for health. But excess can produce so much damage, that any trace of a benefit is erased. Moderate use of alcohol includes two drinks for a man and only one for a woman per day, under the age of 65. Together with his doctor, a person will establish whether to enjoy a glass of wine or a beer, or this can seriously affect health.

In small quantities, the following benefits can result from alcohol:

– It decreases the risk of cardiovascular problems

– Decreases the possibility of lethal heart attack

– Sometimes, alcohol reduces the possibility of ischemic or other kind of strokes

– Diminishes the possibility of gallstone

– It may reduce the diabetes danger

In large quantities, or in excess, the consequences may be terrible:

– The pancreas, the mouth, pharynx, esophageal, breast and liver are more likely to be affected by cancer

– Pancreatitis may appear, especially in youth

– Stroke

– Atrophy of the brain

– Cirrhosis

– Pregnancy problems, like spontaneous abortion

– Possible malformations and other birth problems of the fetus

– Car accidents

– Suicidal tendencies

– Sudden death in case of cardiovascular problems

– Cardiophaty generated by alcohol

There are certain diseases that forbid the affected person to drink at all, such as:

– Conditions of the liver

– Affection of the pancreas

– Precancerous stages affecting the digestive system

– A record including a previous hemorrhagic stroke

Pregnant women or people whose family has an alcohol related background must be extremely cautious and, if possible, not to drink at all.

One drink each day is permitted to persons over 65 years, because in their case, a higher consume is more dangerous; the process of absorption needs more time, the effects are stronger, and the risk of intoxication is a real one.

Alcohol must not be used during the following medications’ administration:

– Anticoagulants

– Medication for diabetes

– Beta blockers

– Antihistamines

– Antibiotics

– Antidepressants

– Pain relievers

– Sleeping pills

Alcohol should not interfere with medication at all, because in combination to aspirin increases its stomach damaging action and the possibility of gastrointestinal hemorrhage, if combined with acetamine damages the liver.

Both he positive effects of a reduced quantity and the dangerous, negative ones must be taken into consideration. Also, a person shouldn’t be influenced to drink, because no doctor will give such piece of advice. Consumed with responsibility and moderation, in case of healthy persons, the alcohol doesn’t need to be completely eliminated.

Oversight Committee: White House attempted to influence Congressional elections

Thursday, October 16, 2008

A report released by the US House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform today found that the White House had “used the political affairs office to orchestrate an aggressive strategy to use taxpayer-funded trips to help elect Republican candidates” during the 2006 Congressional elections. The actions of the White House may have breached the Hatch Act, which prohibits government involvement with taxpayer dollars in political affairs.

The Office of Political Affairs coordinated the efforts, and while it has been used in the past to support political parties, the Committee called the level of involvement “unprecedented” and a “gross abuse of public trust”. A total of 99 Republican candidates were supported by the actions.

Political Affairs requested that its officials attend events of and support key members of the 2006–2007 Congressional race. Administration officials attended a total of 425 events, including parties, fundraising dinners, speeches, and appearances with Republican candidates — an average of more than an event each day of the election season. A third of the events were paid for with tax dollars.

White House emails used in the report referred to the taxpayer-funded events as “top priorities”.

Former Political Affairs director Ken Melhman said during an investigative interview that it was a “big part” of his job was to “help elect allies of the President”. The job was legal, he said, because it promoted executive allies. Mehlman had discussed his actions with the White House Counsel of the time, Alberto Gonzales, who approved of the efforts.

The Committee noted that the director of the Office of National Drug Control Policy, John Walters, helped with nineteen events though his position was restricted from campaign activities.

Mehlman said that his department had worked directly with the National Republican Congressional Committee on the strategy. They had worked together to pick “vulnerable Republican incumbents”, “battleground races” and “places where they agreed the most help was needed”. The White House kept a ‘target list’ of ‘allies’ who were in tight races.

Investigators also questioned Sara Taylor, a former director of Political Affairs and Karl Rove aid. According to the report, Taylor resisted questioning and “misled the Committee about her actions”. Taylor said the trips were efforts to be helpful but could not remember why some were helped and others not.

The report recommended an amendment of the Hatch Act and for the Political Affairs department to be abolished.

Republican Representative Tom Davis, a senior member of the Committee, said that every administration since Eisenhower has done similar things. He said the Democrats had set out to find banned activity and had “feigned shock”, calling their response “righteous indignation”.

A White House spokesman accused the Committee of trying to “score political points”, and that the report was a waste of time and taxpayer money.

Donald Trump plans £300m “golfing paradise” for rural Scotland

Saturday, April 1, 2006

American multi-billionaire Donald Trump has announced plans to build a massive golf complex on an 800-acre site just north of Aberdeen, Scotland.

Speaking last night from the Trump Tower in New York, Trump said that the development will be akin to a “homecoming” for him. The ginger-haired property tycoon’s mother is from the Western Isles of Scotland.

The £300m project at Menie in Aberdeenshire will include both a links course and an inland course, and a 400-bedroom hotel as well as a golfing academy and holiday homes. The facilities are being built with the intention of attracting the Open Championship to the site, officially dubbed Trump International Golf Links, Scotland.

Fields and sand-dunes make up the landscape of the coastal site. Trump said of the location, “As soon as I saw it there was no question about it. I looked at 211 fantastic sites all over Europe, but here it is – the dune size and the ocean front. There is no piece of land that I have ever seen that is comparable to this.” The billionaire claims that the complex, set to be his only development outside the United States, will be the “best course in the world.”

Local and national political figures, including Scottish First Minister Jack McConnell, have welcomed the announcement with open arms, as the project is expected to bring in an additional £157m to the region’s economy within the first ten years. Scottish tourism company VisitScotland is also optimistic, expecting an influx of international visitors to play on (or simply visit) the site. Plans to expand the A90 road running past the site in the near future will enable more road traffic to and around the area. An £60m expansion of Aberdeen Airport will also allow for vastly increased international air links, akin to those operated using Boeing 767 aircraft.

Work on the golf complex itself is set to begin in September this year, with the Trump Organisation hopeful for a Spring 2008 opening date.

Looking For A Unique Dog? Consider The Rhodesian Ridgeback

By Bruno

The dog world is blessed with many wonderful breeds, from the tiny Chihuahua to the giant Mastiff. However, dog lovers in search of a unique personality and an equally unique look may want to look a bit further a field for their new canine companion. For many years discerning dog owners have been charmed by the beautiful and highly intelligent Rhodesian Ridgeback, and this wonderful breed certainly makes an impact wherever it goes.

As the name implies, the Rhodesian Ridgeback originally hails from Africa, although its origins lie in the country of South Africa and not Rhodesia. This unique breed was originally bred as a hunting dog, and it often accompanied big game hunters as they sought at their quarry. In fact, the Rhodesian Ridgeback is also known as the African Lion Hound, no doubt a tribute to its big game hunting heritage.

The ridge for which the Rhodesian Ridgeback is named is a product of its wild heritage, and one of the most prominent features of the breed. For hundreds of years, European immigrants living in Rhodesia, the country known today as Zimbabwe, had crossed their own dogs with the native dogs the region. These native dogs featured a prominent ridge along their back, and they passed that distinct feature on to their crossbred offspring.

Of course these early Rhodesian Ridgebacks were valued for far more than their unusual coats. The natives of this wild land needed dogs that could perform multiple duties, from hunting and herding to protecting the property of their masters.

In addition, those early dog owners needed dogs that were easy to keep and that required little in the way of grooming. They found all that and more in the Rhodesian Ridgeback, and the modern breed continues to exhibit all of these highly desirable qualities.

These days many Rhodesian Ridgebacks continue their lives as top quality hunting dogs. Although fewer may hunt lions and other big game these days, they also excel at retrieving and flushing out smaller game. Sportsmen from around the world continue to value this unique breed for its intelligence, its loyalty and its natural hunting ability.

These same qualities make the Rhodesian Ridgeback a superior watchdog, and the breed is known for its fierce loyalty to its family. Rhodesian Ridgebacks are highly intelligent, loyal and affectionate, and they make wonderful pets for active families. They make wonderful running, jogging and hiking companions as well, and they have amazing stamina.

On the downside, the Rhodesian Ridgeback can be a stubborn breed, and it is important to properly train and socialize them as puppies. Those dog lovers considering buying a puppy should keep in mind that Rhodesian Ridgebacks are very large dogs, and it is important for the dog owner to establish themselves as pack leader right from the start.

The appearance of the Rhodesian Ridgeback is regal and elegant, and the breed seems to know just how handsome it is. The most prominent feature of the breed, of course, is the ridge of hair on its back. This ridge, for which the breed is named, runs the opposite direction from the rest of the short coat.

Of course there is much more to the Rhodesian Ridgeback than mere beauty, and these wonderful dogs make wonderful companions. They are also the perfect canine companions for those seeking a low maintenance dog. The short coat of the Rhodesian Ridgeback means that its grooming needs are minimal. For the most part all these dogs need is an occasional brushing with a dense wire brush or a relaxing rubdown with a smooth cloth. This type of grooming will help to bring out the natural oils in the coat and help keep these beautiful dogs looking their best.

So if you are looking for a unique and beautiful canine companion, you may want to consider bringing a Rhodesian Ridgeback into your life. When you welcome one of these lovely dogs into your home and your heart you can enjoy many years of loyalty, companionship and protection. From the wilds of Africa to the heart of the biggest city, these wonderful dogs bring a wealth of history, a natural hunting ability and a regal charm to their surroundings.
